English

At Redbourn Junior School we inspire a love of reading by providing high-quality texts, both fiction and non-fiction, and an enthusiasm for reading through the promotion of books by teachers to the children.  We ensure that children will become confident in using a range of decoding, comprehension and inference skills.  Through quality teaching, children will be given skills that will enhance their reading particularly when using expression and punctuation in a text.  They will be given rich opportunities to read a range of texts out loud to an audience.  We encourage cross-curricular reading and invite story tellers and authors into the school to further develop their love of literature.

We aim to prepare our children to become confident, creative and independent writers who enjoy and understand the different structures of fiction and non-fiction text types.  Accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar and legible handwriting will allow their ideas to be recorded successfully and their writing to flow, and at the same time encourage the children to take pride in their written work.  Experiencing a wide range of texts and genres, enables the children to develop an awareness of author’s intentions, therefore enabling them to write imaginatively for purpose and effect and to engage the reader.

In speaking and listening, children are encouraged to listen, respond and recall key information in a text and evaluate what they hear.   Children will develop skills in summarising, questioning and retrieving information and will be able to communicate their ideas and thoughts clearly.  Our aim is to equip the children to become confident and articulate, enabling them to communicate effectively in every situation.
